Shooting Infrared Photography

Infrared photography works in the domain of invisible light, revealing to us parts of the world that the human eye cannot perceive, it offers us to take a set of pictures that are visual in mood and unnatural though normal visible light, giving an alternative to normal colour photography.

Combining digital photography with a converted sensor in a DSLR camera we can simple convert images into Black and White, experiment with colour modifications or keep it the image in the raw sepia look of the white balance files in Photoshop

With most infrared converted cameras, like the Nikon D200, there is a WB (white balance ) button or a pre-set in the menu. Hold down the button and a  “Pre” will flash on and off. Now just shoot pictures of a white card or grass for a good light balance. (the camera will indict  “Good” or “no Good”)

Now just go out and be creative, in this park seen, there are lots of people milling about sitting around the trees and grass. This reflects invisible light, on benches near water and around manmade structures, that does not reflected invisible light. This contrast can make for very dramatic pictures as well as bringing a calmness back into our “normal” photography as well.
